A Note About Bankruptcy Form Preparers

If you cannot afford an attorney but are uncomfortable with preparing your own bankruptcy filing forms, a bankruptcy form preparation service might be helpful for you.  Before paying a paralegal, legal assistant or document preparer, there are a few things you need to consider:

	Non-attorney legal service providers are not permitted to give you legal advice. Many must be registered with their state. Check your state's government and regulatory websites to make sure that if you hire a non-attorney to handle your forms, that the person is licensed to do so (if required).
	It is possible that your case might involve litigation. In most states, only you (if you represent yourself) or a licensed attorney may represent you in court. Document preparers, paralegals and legal assistants cannot do so.
	If you obtain bankruptcy assistance from an attorney, a bankruptcy petition preparer, or debt relief agency, you must be given a written contract that specifies the work that will be done on your behalf and how much it will cost. If you are not given such a contract, walk away.
